We discussed "The Gray Mills of Farley" as a work of Naturalism. We read Kate Chopin's "The Story of An Hour" and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" as two works of feminism during the Industrialization period.
I also introduced the Comparative Study Outline assessment. This will be done in class on Thursday (Sheldon) and Tuesday (South).

IB Literature of the Americas

We are beginining our unit on the Literature of Industrialization.
I defined Naturalism as a literary movement. We discussed the Jack London short story, "South of the Slot" as representative of Naturalism. The homework is to read "St. Columba and the River" on p. 49 of the Industrialization packet.

Today we finished discussing Hamlet, Act 2, scene 2.
We examined the significance of Shakespeare's use of poetry and prose within the play.
We also looked at references to the Great Chain of Being in this scene.
The homework is to re-read Act One, Two and Act Three scene 1&2.

IB Literature of the Americas

Students are still finishing the IB Oral Presentations on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These have been truly outstanding!
If you have not yet presented....be prepared to do so this week!
I introduced our new unit on Native American Literature and gave out the reading assignment: read the short story by Zitkala Sa.

Today students presented scenes from Act 1, scene 2-5 of Hamlet. We talked about emerging themes and patterns of imagery.
The homework is to read Act 2, scene 1.
There will be a quiz on Act 1 on Monday/Tuesday!

IB Literature of the Americas
Happy New Year to all of my juniors!
Today the IB Oral Presentations on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn continued. I also returned the Huck Finn analysis essays.
For those in my Projects section, the final deadline for first semester work is January 23.

Today I returned the IB Comparative Study Essays and discussed the upcoming IB Lit Review session to be held this Thursday at Sheldon from 5-8 pm.
I also introduced a scene-study activity for Hamlet, Act One, and students created eight small groups. Students will present their cutting from scenes 2-5 on Thursday and Friday....with costumes and props....and dramatic expression!
